A variety of studies suggest that more than half of women report having experienced sexual abuse and harassment during their childhood and adolescence and that 10-15 percent report having been the victims of unequivocal sexual assault.
Abstract
The studies examining the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse of women reach widely varying conclusions, largely because of the varying definitions used and the differences in the age groups included. Many of the studies have used randomly selected community samples and have gathered information through interviews. The studies reporting the highest rates have included abuse to age 18 and have included noncontact abuse, unwanted sexual touching, and violent sexual assault. Those who design programs to address this problem should make clear the range of behaviors being discussed and should avoid either underestimating or exaggerating the problem. 7 references.
