Abuse and neglect of the elderly exist in both obvious and subtle forms and require responses that include effective staff orientation and development, as well as the establishment of policies and procedures that clearly define roles and responsibilities.
Abstract
Subtle forms of abuse and neglect include lack of attention to privacy during intimate care and personal interviews, failing to use the surname and honorific titles, and failing to reinforce decisionmaking skills. To prevent abuse and neglect, health and human service agencies should sensitize all their staff members and conduct regular inservice sessions for staff. They should also involve staff, clients, and family members in developing appropriate policies and procedures. These policies should be simple, focused on prevention, and matched to the needs and mission of the agency. Case examples, list of issues for discussion, and 4 references.
