This summary of a 1989 conference held in British Columbia, Canada to discuss research findings and policy issues regarding the prevention, detection, and treatment of domestic assault focuses on the main points raised by conference speakers.
Abstract
The speakers emphasized that programs to address domestic violence must be viewed in their historical, social, and political contexts; that development of theory is urgently needed; and that existing models and theories might have the unintended consequences of perpetuating abuse against women, children, and elderly persons. In addition, therapeutic programs should be based on the requirements and ideas of victims and perpetrators, treatment programs for abusive men need thorough evaluations, and initial assessments of abusers should be comprehensive. Moreover, more research should focus on basic measurement issues, efforts should focus on intervening early in victims' lives, and information about abuse must be projected clearly and powerfully. 9 references.
