The CJCC was created in 1981 to serve as a statewide criminal justice coordinating body to respond exclusively to the needs of the Georgia criminal justice system and its interdependent agencies and components. The Council performs the following functions: (1) facilitation of criminal justice system communication and coordination; (2) criminal justice system information dissemination; (3) identification of significant issues and recommendation of solutions; (4) development of legislative and executive policy proposals; (5) advise the Governor, the judiciary, and the legislature on issues affecting the Georgia criminal justice system; (6) development and prioritization of a Criminal Justice Policy Agenda; and (7) grant administration. The CJCC prepares, publishes, and disseminates a number of publications. Biannual surveys are conducted to assist in the identification of major issues and priorities in the field, and recommendations are made. A special advisory committee was formed to address the needs of victims of crime. Negotiations were completed to re-establish the Georgia Statistical Analysis Bureau. Several conferences aimed at development, prioritization, and publication of a coordinated policy agenda for the Georgia criminal justice system were held, as were training sessions at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. Finally, the Federal Grants Advisory Committee of the CJCC awarded 38 grants totaling $3,526,740.00 during fiscal years 1988 and 1989.
