This report presents information on Crime Index offenses committed in Hawaii during the first three quarters of 1989.
Abstract
Statewide index offenses for the first 9 months of 1989 increased 7 percent over the total reported in the first 9 months of 1988. Index offenses increased in all counties. Violent crimes increased by 3 percent, with murders up 45 percent, and forcible rapes up 22 percent. Robberies increased by two percent, while aggravated assaults decreased by two percent. Property crimes increased by seven percent with all counties reporting increases in all categories of property crime except Maui and Kauai counties for motor vehicle thefts. Maui and Kauai counties observed 19 and 3 percent decreases, respectively, in motor vehicle thefts. Larceny-theft, the most frequently reported index offense, accounted for 68 percent of the crime index. Statewide, larceny-thefts were up six percent. Burglaries increased 9 percent, while statewide, motor vehicle thefts went up 19 percent. The increase in the crime index for the first 9 months was greater in 1989 than it was in 1987 and in 1988. The 1989 rate of increase was last equaled or exceeded in 1986, when the statewide index moved up by 9 percent. 16 tables and 10 figures.
