Australia's National Prison Census was completed in June 1989 and included all persons on remand or serving sentences at prisons for adult offenders operated by State or territory correctional agencies.
Abstract
Most of the census information was obtained from existing records. Information not on record was collected, where feasible, through individual prisoner interviews. All prisoners included in the census were recorded according to the jurisdiction in which they were in custody, regardless of the jurisdiction imposing the sentence. The prisoner's date of birth was used to calculate the prisoner's age at census date. Information was also obtained on marital status, employment status, highest level of education, most serious offense, Federal offense, state or territory of court of sentence or most recent remand in custody, legal status of prisoner, drug or alcohol involvement in offense, aggregate sentence, and sentence type. The total number of prisoners was 12,964, including 11,269 sentenced prisoners and 1,675 remandees; males comprised 12,284 of this total. Tables and figures
