Coursework objectives are to obtain factual information on drugs and to create a comfortable atmosphere where Asian American children can share feelings, thoughts, and ideas.
Abstract
The legal aspects of substance abuse, the effects of drugs, and the drug slang specific to each Asian American ethnic group are discussed. Nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine are the focus of this discussion. Exercises in identifying the Asian American decisionmaking process (collaborative v. individualistic) and learning and practicing the decisionmaking process which reflects one's values are implemented. Values that are specific to each ethnic group are defined and identified, and discussion centers on how this affects the decisionmaking process. Techniques on how to deal with peer pressure are learned, as well as learning how to identify values and their effect in inter-ethnic peer relationship. Recognizing that anger can be used constructively and generating healthy methods for dealing with anger comprises further activities. Students are taught to become aware of their feelings, and how these feelings may change.
