This report describes how the Washington Governor's Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee has, in 1989, promoted delinquency prevention and improved the juvenile justice system in the State by fulfilling the Federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, serving as an information resource, providing policy recommendations and technical assistance, sponsoring public education programs, and awarding funds.
Abstract
The criteria for the Committee's selection of projects to fund are described, and a listing of funded projects is provided. Projects fall under the subject areas of serious and violent offenders, detention, juvenile offenders, physically and sexually abused children, regional juvenile justice program development, and technical assistance and research. Particular Committee concerns in the areas of detention and juvenile offenders are discussed. Another section deals with minority youth in the State criminal justice system. The data analysis section analyzes information on demographics, school enrollment and dropout rates, youth suicides, families served by Child Protective Services and by Family Reconciliation Services, juvenile arrests and court filings, detention rates, and populations in the Department of Juvenile Rehabilitation institutions and adult jails. 65 tables and 10 figures
