The rate at which judges sentence juvenile offenders to death remains extremely low, peaking at 14 in 1982, while total death sentences have totaled approximately 300 per year over the past 17 or 18 years. Two recent Supreme Court decisions may result in an increase of juvenile death sentences to about 10 per year.
Abstract
While juvenile death sentences have totaled two percent of all such sentences since 1983, in the last few years, they have equaled only one percent of the annual totals. As of October 1, 1990, 31 persons remained on death row for crimes they committed while under the age of 18. This paper lists the juvenile death sentences imposed between 1983 and October 1, 1990 by year, offender's name, age at crime, race and sex, State, and current status.
