This paper reviews treatment modalities in substance abuse counseling that prepare the offender for coping with everyday problems in a positive manner as well as meet the required empirical, clinical and financial criteria. In addition, these treatment methods are suggested as the basis for development of outpatient substance abuse treatment programs.
Abstract
Self-help groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, can serve as a prelude to psychotherapy, as an adjunct to ongoing treatment, and as a principal tool in continuing care. Three subgroups of psychotherapies: supportive, reeducative, and reconstructive, are mentioned regarding degree of intrusiveness as determined by depth of psychic involvement and length of therapeutic intrusiveness. However, the focus of the discussion is on the first two because of their potential for inclusion in outpatient treatment programs. Supportive therapy can include bibliotherapy, guidance, and education; training in social skills, coping skills, and stress reduction as well as counseling and marital and family therapy are provided through the other forms of psychotherapy. Comprehensive outpatient services, comprised of these psychotherapies following primary intervention, can provide quality services at reasonable cost in community corrections. 32 references (Author abstract modified)
