This teaching guide is designed to assist instructors in planning lessons on traffic collision management and investigation.
Abstract
It covers basic concepts of how to respond to the collision scene regarding approach, survey scene hazards, evaluation of medical needs, life saving requirements, and determination of hit and run. Procedures are provided for care for the injured or dead, traffic control, spectator control, removal of vehicle, and hit and run incidents. In addition, procedures for broadcast description, collection of evidence, photography, officer safety, hazardous materials, documentation of collision vehicles are described as well as obtaining human and environment information in pre-crash, crash, and post crash phases. Traffic accident reports, including classification of injuries, witness information, and prosecution and court presentations are also covered. Guidelines for preparing a diagram or sketch of the scene, identifying types of physical evidence used to determine cause of collision, and information required from a collision investigation interview are also provided. 13 references
