The role of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) in the drug war and drug prevention programs is discussed.
Abstract
The role of AFOSI is one of jointly participating in drug interdiction and enforcement efforts with DEA, US Customs and various local and State police agencies as well as jointly investigating drug trafficking operations with local and State agencies. As of 1985, DOD's policy permits DOD criminal investigative organizations to gather evidence of drug trafficking between civilians and military members and provide this evidence for appropriate civilian and military prosecutive actions. AFOSI has played an important role in reducing the demand for drugs by Air Force drug users due to its intensive drug testing programs. AFOSI takes advantage of its ability to converse with drug abusers undercover and provides drug testing program managers with information and techniques used to enhance the deterrence value of urine testing.
