The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Key Indicators/Strategic Support System (KI/SSS), a personal computer-based, menu-driven program, allows correctional managers and administrators a comprehensive tool for viewing agency operations and undertaking strategic planning at their institutions.
Abstract
The indicators consist of extensive information on each BOP institution, region, and security level and the BOP as a whole; the data allow users to analyze system changes including levels of crowding, distribution of inmates, inmate misconduct, participation in educational programs, and staff perceptions of well-being and safety. The KI/SSS system can frame appropriate quality control standards and evaluate compliance with policy objectives by monitoring measurable standards against measurable quality characteristics. The indicators can link external or internal events to changes that occur in quality characteristics. The system is designed to provide easy access to appropriate displays of information other than year-end statistical reports or ad hoc reports. The KI/SSS data are obtained from archived extracts of the BOP mainframe data bases, aggregated to provide indicators of organizational behavior and performance, and downloaded to a local network of personal computers. 2 figures
