America is not competitive with other industrialized nations in caring for its children and preparing for its future. This inadequate national performance is reflected in the inadequate testing performance of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Some priorities for advances for children include: (1) establishing high achievement and graduation goals for all students; (2) expanding job training, apprenticeship, and community service programs that equip young adults with job skills; (3) expanding programs that increase the supply of health care services for underserved communities; and (4) ensuring a living family wage and income supplements for low-income families. In order to attain these goals, the public is encouraged to write Federal and State government leaders, attend town meetings, register and vote for children, and monitor how representatives at all levels vote on key children's and family issues and hold them accountable.
