Abstract
The number of adults arrested for total Index crimes increased in arrests for each of the eight crimes in the Index; the increase in juveniles arrested was due to an increase in each of the eight Index crimes except for arson and burglary. Clearance rate increased for each Index offense except for theft, while the violent crime clearance rate was the highest since 1978. Reported violent crime increase (9.4 percent) was higher than the increase of reported property crime (5.9 percent). During the last 5 years, the number of adults arrested for Index crimes increased by 22.2 percent, whereas the juvenile arrests increased by 1.2 percent. During 1989, the increase in total and property crime was greater in Wisconsin than in the Midwest and the entire United States, whereas the increase in violent crime was less than the increase rate in the Midwest and United States. 2 graphs and 8 tables
