Abstract
The general framework for the analysis of deviance (GFAD) is applied to information provided by Block and Bernard in their article, "Crime in the Waste Oil Industry". It is comprised of five submodels and their interrelationships. Each of the sub-models corresponds to an important concern in the study of deviance. These concerns include the environmental, technological, economic, and social context for deviance; impacts of deviance on individuals; public perceptions of the phenomena; public decision-making and action; and decision-making by social actors which result in deviant behavior. Block and Bernard, through their explanation of deviance with strain, differential opportunity, and social reaction theories, provide an explanation for the complicated social processes involved. The GFAD, on the other hand, incorporates more explicit various social and physical aspects into the analysis. 7 figures and 1 reference (Author abstract modified)
