These figures, tables, and narrative summaries present information about juvenile correctional populations, institutions, programs, and personnel in 1990.
Abstract
Data were gathered by means of a questionnaire survey of juvenile correctional agencies in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and from followup telephone calls that verified the data and gathered further information. The information covers the juvenile inmate population and demographic characteristics, types of juvenile commitments, releases, escapes, captures, assaults, and inmate deaths. Additional tables focus on the numbers and types of facilities, crowding and methods for dealing with it, plans for added beds, current and future operating expenses, home furloughs, the cost and use of halfway houses, drug treatment programs, mental health programs, sex offender programs, and staff characteristics and compensation.
