According to statistics compiled in Michigan's Uniform Crime Report for 1989, total crime was down 0.1 percent over 1988, with a crime rate of 13,427 per 100,000 population equating to 1 reported crime for every 7 Michigan residents.
Abstract
Murder decreased by 2.1 percent over 1988 figures. Burglary decreased by 7.7 percent, aggravated assault by 4.7 percent, larceny by 0.6 percent, robbery by 7.9 percent, arson by 10.3 percent, and motor vehicle theft by 2.8 percent. Total arrests increased by 7.3 percent over 1988, and juveniles aged 16 years and under accounted for 9.9 percent of all those arrested. Most murder victims were black, male, and between 25 and 39 years of age; 64 percent were killed by some type of firearm, and 43.9 percent were murdered by a family member or acquaintance. Extensive statistical data are presented on offenses and arrests by age, sex, and race and by State and county jurisdiction. Comments on 1989 crime data address crime factors, crime rates, urban versus rural crime, decade crime trends, and law enforcement officers killed or assaulted.
