Recent literature reflects a trend toward viewing juvenile delinquency from a family systems perspective. A survey of 94 such offenders and their parents reveals a gross lack of parental information about the rehabilitative process and post-release adjustment.
Abstract
In the case of incarcerated serious juvenile offenders, however, the role of the family in rehabilitation appears less clear. A pilot education program was developed for families and offenders to address specific informational deficiencies in such areas as rules, functions, and procedures with the institution. A later pre-release educational program addresses such issues as community services available, parole rules, and family issues that affect adjustment. Recommendations for expansion and implementation of this 2-stage educational program are also presented. 2 notes and 20 references (Author abstract modified)
