Larceny-thefts were up 5.4 percent; property crimes increased by 6.5 percent; and the numbers of murders, rapes, and robberies increased by 18 percent, 40 percent, and 0.7 percent, respectively. Larceny theft comprised 71 percent of the property crimes, while burglary and motor vehicle theft accounted for 22 percent and 6.6 percent of the property crimes, respectively. The number of reported arsons decreased by 5.3 percent in 1989. The value of property stolen in Hawaii increased by 4.7 percent. In 1989, there were 63,573 total arrests for nontraffic offenses. Twenty-five percent of the arrestees were juveniles, compared to 27 percent in 1988. There were 4,095 arrests for drug abuse violations, an increase of 8.0 percent from 1988. Juveniles made up 13 percent of those arrested. Fifty-one percent of all arrests for drug abuse violations were for possession of marijuana.
