The Southern Oregon Adolescent Study and Treatment Center (SOASTC) had adopted the theoretical model described in this paper for the practice of psychiatric residential treatment for children and adolescents.
Abstract
This model program, an alternative psychiatric treatment facility for 12 youth, admits youth who are moderately to severely emotionally disturbed and who are unable to benefit from less restrictive or intensive treatment modalities; the 40 practice principles described in this paper outline the specific treatment techniques and administrative procedures of the facility. Central to the treatment process is a focus on mutual interaction and dependency between participants, patients, and therapists. Behavioral control and therapeutic change are achieved through constant attention to small group dynamics. Finally, the Center itself is considered a social system and moves through regularly recurring, cyclic stages of organizational development. The 40 principles are grouped into 6 clusters including program organization, physical environment, program personnel, clinical practices, therapeutic milieu, and interpersonal relationships. 1 figure and 31 references
