In the latter part of the 1980's and in 1990, the LTBS developed and promulgated policies designed to upgrade the qualifications and performance of court interpreters. This has included the implementation of programs for credentialing interpreters, translators, and other bilingual court personnel. A screening test is required for interpreter applicants and applicants for other positions that require language interpretation skills. A summary of the interpreting services delivered by the LTBS shows that most of the services involved deaf/hearing-impaired persons and Spanish-speaking persons. Translation services delivered are also described. The LTBS has offered professional development for court interpreters. This includes funding and materials for the continuing education of interpreters through such means as specialized courses and training conferences. Training has also been provided for other court employees to increase their knowledge of court interpreting policies and procedures and facilitate their improved use of interpreters. Other LTBS activities involve public education, administration, conference presentations, and publications.
