Twenty-five percent of the facilities surveyed report they do not pursue accreditation because it is too expensive. Another 16 percent say the accreditation process is too time consuming. Eleven percent say they do not know enough about accreditation. Although only 6 of the 56 facilities surveyed say they plan to pursue accreditation, 81 percent report they consider accreditation standards effective measures of good facility management. Eighty-five percent of the facilities report they own and use a copy of the standards manual. Some who disagree with accreditation standards comment that the standards benefit newer institutions, leave too much room for disagreement, or are unrealistic. Other reasons for not pursuing accreditation include a State prohibition against accreditation, the age of the physical plant, other priorities, and standards not in the best interest of the facility. 1 chart
