The first step in developing park security measures is to conduct a needs assessment that reviews the frequency and severity of criminal activity in the park including personal injuries and property damage. A high number of property crimes may suggest the need to place identification codes on property, to install alarms and key control procedures, to upgrade exterior lighting, and to enhance night police patrols or use site security officers. Any gang and drug problems identified can be addressed through youth education programs offered in conjunction with local schools, parenting skills workshops, and public service advertising campaigns. Cooperation between park directors, the police, and the community is crucial to an effective park crime prevention program. Park directors can work with police to ensure police patrols during special events, and community groups can organize and implement anti-graffiti efforts.
