The number of cases filed in the Indiana judicial system showed a modest growth of 3 percent from 1988 to 1989, and there was also a corresponding increase in the number of case dispositions.
Abstract
The nature of the workload in Indiana's Court of Appeals was changed by amended Trial Rules 58 and 77 promulgated in 1989 that affected initial appeals in criminal cases. The number of criminal matters directly appealed to this court nearly doubled in 1989 from the previous year. This growth was mitigated somewhat by a decline in the number of civil appeals. The net effect, however, was that the Indiana Court of Appeals was not able to dispose of as many cases as were filed. The Indiana Tax Court experienced very little caseload growth in 1989. There was a modest increase in the number of cases filed in trial courts during 1989, and much of this growth was associated with serious criminal matters. Traffic, juvenile, civil, and domestic relations case filings remained constant. For the first time in 1989, tort litigation was segregated from other civil litigation; there were 5,765 tort cases and 61,891 other civil matters. An overview of the Indiana judicial system's organization and administration is provided. Extensive statistical data are given on court caseloads, case dispositions, and State judicial system revenues and expenditures. Figures and tables
