This pamphlet presents a community-based approach toward the prevention and treatment of alcohol and drug abuses among the Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Reservation in northwest Montana.
Abstract
It describes a 6-step process used by the tribes in the Blue Bay Healing Center. First, the extent of the problem of alcohol abuse on the reservation was examined as well as its effects on tribal values. Four healing principles that support the culture and tradition of the tribes were identified as a primary mode of attack on this problem. Then the process examined resources within the community including healthy adults as role models of drug-free behavior. The action plan consisted of family as well as community participation in the transition and adjustment process of recovery of the substance abuser returning to the reservation from a treatment program. Following an evaluation of the process, appropriate adjustments were made and the whole process was initiated again.
