The protocol followed the initiation of a research program that developed uniform nomenclature, standards, and controls for forensic DNA testing; provided technical training within the crime laboratory community; continued research efforts for simpler and less costly methods of DNA testing; and explored the establishment of a nationwide DNA profile data base. The protocol describes the procedure to be used in DNA profiling. Results from the protocol validation were satisfying, and the initial results indicate a cost of about $30 per sample. The FBI has devised a 4-week training course for scientists from local and State laboratories and is pursuing plans to create a data bank for DNA profiles comprised of general population data as well as specific investigative data.
