Reorienting the drug abusing offender to be both a law- abiding and drug-free member of society requires a specific and intensive program of action.
Abstract
Such a program must include: (1) early identification of the drug-abusing offender, (2) specific and suitable referrals to treatment, (3) a treatment plan based on a thorough assessment, (4) a substantial course of supervision contacts that include accountability measurements and include drug testing and sanctions for non-compliance, and (5) unbroken communication and collaboration between community corrections and drug abuse treatment providers. In a number of jurisdictions, community corrections and alcohol and other drug treatments work in partnership to achieve successful intervention with the drug-abusing offender. Background on the development of these collaborative efforts is provided as well as general information on the recent evolution of the community corrections system. The eventual formation of the Interagency Drug Training and Technical Assistance Project is described with details of Phase I and Phase II plans provided. 1 table and 10 references
