This report provides information relating to the clients and activities of the probation service in England and Wales in 1989, together with comparable information for earlier years.
Abstract
The chapters are organized according to the type of probation supervision offered. Types of supervision include traditional probation, supervision under the Children and Young Persons Act 1969, suspended sentence and money-payment supervisions, community service orders, prerelease and postrelease aftercare, and domestic supervision (matrimonial proceedings, wardship, guardianship, and Children Act 1975). Tables showing time-series data cover 9-11 years, depending on the length of time for which comparable data have been available. Summary data cover the number of persons under various types of probationary supervision. Data for each type of supervision cover client age and sex, criminal record, area of residence, previous custodial sentence, length of order, and terminations. Other probation statistics pertain to social inquiry reports, conciliation work, staffing, average caseloads and numbers of reports completed, and expenditures. 26 figures and 52 tables
