The National Coalition for Jail Reform is the first broad-based coalition in the criminal justice field working to eliminate inappropriate confinement, develop and refine alternatives to confinement, and develop and enforce standards as a prerequisite to improving jail conditions. Other objectives include increasing public awareness of the present jail situation and involving a wide range of community groups and governmental agencies in remedying the problems of jails.
Abstract
This publication describes the Coalition's members and affiliates, the organization's genesis, its representatives and staff, and its funders. Policies regarding public inebriates, juveniles, mentally ill and retarded persons, pretrial release, and jail conditions are detailed. Highlights of Coalition activities in the areas of public education and information exchange and assistance are outlined.
