As incest or child sexual abuse within the family structure gains more public attention, increasing attention needs to be paid to providing necessary counseling and support services to both survivors, those who have extricated themselves from the incestuous situation, and victims who are still in the abusive situation. This paper focuses on counseling for female victims and survivors who have been sexually abused by male relatives; it addresses many areas of counseling which have historically been colored by sexism.
Abstract
Each of the 23 guidelines offered in this report is accompanied by a brief commentary. The guidelines urge counselors to look at the societal forces that permit and encourage sexual offenders to act out their distress on their (largely female) victims. Still, clients must be made to take responsibility for the behavior patterns they manifest as a result of their childhood experiences. Guidelines for establishing self-help support groups, in terms of structure and counseling techniques, are listed.
