This paper explores the various types of treatment programs currently available for chemically dependent adolescents who completed some type of residential treatment and are now returning to the community, home, and school.
Abstract
Common elements in the many different types of inpatient or residential programs for chemically dependent adolescents include: (1) a disease model approach to chemical dependency; (2) some major support group system; (3) attempts to create a structured lifestyle or provide time structure; (4) nonintoxicated socialization often with other recovering adolescents; and (5) some mechanism for assessing other emotional problems as they surface. The elements cited as being the most effective for promoting recovery from chemical dependency are leadership, safety, and structure. Common issues or problems that may arise during the course of continuing care treatment include relapse prevention and relapse management, resistance and denial, self-esteem issues, and dual diagnosis issues. 24 references (Author abstract modified)
