The procedure is implemented in instances in which the investigation of alleged sexual abuse by a father or stepfather is inconclusive due to the young age of the child, yet where information obtained in the investigation indicates a clear sense of risk to the child. The therapeutic management process, which includes follow-up of the child and alleged offender as often as sessions are feasible, monitoring of the child's status, and keeping in touch with the child, is described in detail in the form of instructions to practitioners. In the eight years this approach has been used, follow-up on seven of the initial cases has revealed no additional abuse allegations over a 5-year period for six of the cases. Questionable behavior occurred in the seventh case, but no formal allegations had been made. A case illustration is included. 3 references
