This information is intended to help detention managers to develop public relations strategies.
Abstract
The manager should determine who among the general public he wants to reach, what to say to them, and how to carry the message. The message may be an appeal for support for a certain project or a progress report. The target audience may be civic clubs, sports groups, human rights groups, etc. Direct mail, postcards, and posters are among the many ways to get the message out. Notes should be taken on initial efforts and adjustments made. The strategy should be tested in an actual emergency with public relations procedures already in place. All dealings with the media should be open and honest to avoid future embarrassing disclosures. A sample survey of communications channels is included.
