An evaluation is presented of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program that is designed to prevent substance abuse in children by beginning intervention in the elementary grades.
Abstract
The prevention of drug abuse through DARE must be assessed indirectly by evaluating various constructs related to drug abuse. Assertiveness is associated with healthy adjustment and does have a relationship to resisting pressure to use drugs. Although the evidence supporting DARE's success in promoting assertiveness was weak, some positive evidence did exist. Students were able to identify the "RISK" in a potentially dangerous situation and were able to generate more alternative solutions in the situation. The program gave the students an opportunity to have a more positive identification with the DARE officers. It is evident that the DARE program provided the children with information and skills that maximized their potential for adopting healthy, drug-free habits. 2 references
