The primary focus in the study's first year has been on determining the state-of-the-art in the design and construction of detention and correctional facilities. The study identified performance problems associated with various materials, equipment, and systems and reviewed available guidelines, standards, etc., that are or can be used by architects and corrections officials in the planning and design of new correctional facilities. Some performance problems noted involve electronically controlled locking devices, electronic perimeter intrusion detection systems, security glazing, communication systems, doors and locks, fire protection systems, and lighting systems. The study concludes that there are many important criteria and standards that must be developed to improve the selection of materials, equipment, and systems for detention and corrections facilities.
