Abstract
The ethics of the law enforcement profession require that officers provide the same level of service to all individuals, regardless of circumstances. However, the AIDS epidemic has heightened the fear of contracting communicable diseases. This document provides background information on HIV infection as well as Hepatitis-B. General preventive measures are outlined including the use of protective barriers, disinfection, and immunizations. Proper procedures for handling needles and for the disposal of contaminated materials are described. Guidelines for action are provided in the event that an officer has been potentially exposed to contamination. Finally, a list of supplies that law enforcement agencies have a duty to provide to their officers to safeguard them from infection is included. 15 endnotes, list of common questions and answers, and 1 reference
