These 14 papers describe programs identified by an American Psychological Association task force as models for preventing emotional or behavioral problems in children, adolescents, and adults.
Abstract
The programs were selected from 300 programs identified in a national survey. Selection criteria included a clear description of the problem to be prevented and the group at risk; the rationale, skills, and approach used in the intervention; the program steps taken to recruit recipients; the observable and measurable objectives; evaluation results; recognition and resolution of ethical issues; and the intervention's transferability to other settings. The programs focused mainly on children and adolescents, particularly poor, minority-group members. The programs were usually provided in schools and social service agencies. Most prevention service providers were nonprofessional community caregivers, educators, and members of program recipients' families.
