Length

This manual summarizes effective procedures in correctional education for adults based on the experience of teachers in a variety of effective literacy programs in prisons around the country and on a review of existing research.
Abstract
The guidelines are based on a survey of prison literacy programs in the United States which gathered information about program goals, teaching strategies, student motivation, educational and psychological assessment instruments, and methods of program evaluation. The analysis showed that effective programs have trained and dedicated staff, administrative support and demonstrate cooperation among the security and group living staffs and a functional educational philosophy. The guidelines cover goal setting, training materials, methods of forming cooperative relationships with businesses and the community, exemplary assessment models, and evaluation methods. Checklists, chapter reference lists, resource lists, and appended discussion of the role of Federal and State governments in correctional education.
