The paper by Shapland and Hobbs uses an overly restrictive definition of the subject and discusses only literature about the English police, not material focusing on Scotland or Northern Ireland. In addition, the criteria for selecting research to be discussed were not clear, although the recommendation to avoid fragmenting police research is admirable. Moreover, other subjects than those listed by Hobbs and Shapland should be considered as possible priority areas for research. These topics include the development of the British police organization, the use of proactive policing, and comparisons of policing in Great Britain and continental Europe. Finally, British research is extensive, although other European countries have also conducted outstanding research on the police.
