While police work seems characterized by a range of stressors, research in this area has been inconsistent.
Abstract
This inconsistency is due to the failure of most research to estimate the actual strain produced by stressors. A 3-part phase model of burnout is suggested as a useful and reliable measure of strain. The model is then applied to three police populations to suggest the distribution of phases encountered in practice. Substantial proportions of the populations of each police force can be found in the most advanced stages of burnout which indicates that strain is a major problem. However, a large proportion of the population indicated a relatively low level of strain at the time of measurement. The phase was effective in delineating levels of strain and could be used effectively not only in research, but in assisting police organizations to track and prevent burnout. 3 tables and 32 notes (Author abstract modified)
