Two procedures used to recover accelerant vapors from fire debris, suspect clothing, and water samples, the C-bag and the charcoal strip, may be used as alternatives to other techniques which employ passive diffusion.
Abstract
These alternatives take advantage of the diffusion of volatiles into the headspace of a closed container, trapping the vapors onto charcoal. The charcoal is either encased in a porous pouch or impregnated onto a flexible membrane. The data collection devices were evaluated in terms of changes in absorption time, temperature, and sample concentration. 11 figures and 9 references (Author abstract modified)
