A Canadian medical journalist began a campaign in 1979 to legalize heroin as a painkiller. His efforts drew a 99 percent approval rating from his readers, but condemnation from the Canadian Cancer Society and other critics.
Abstract
As a result of an expanded fundraising and publicity campaign launched in 1983, the Canadian Minister of Health approved the legalization of heroin the following year. However, bureaucratic regulations that put heroin in a special drug category, ostensibly for security reasons, have severely limited physicians' use of the drug. 1 reference (Author abstract modified)
