This proposed 5-year plan for female inmates in Illinois covers administration, housing requirements, educational and vocational programs, correctional industries, and other inmate programs.
Abstract
Currently, Dwight Correctional Center is the only all female prison in the State. In 1974, additional beds were added at community correctional centers for females. As the prison population has grown, more community center beds have been added, and two male correctional centers (Logan and Dixon) have become co-educational. The total rated capacity for the female population is 893. There are 669 women on community supervision. Programs for women vary from basic education and vocational classes to drug treatment programs and special parenting opportunities. The 5-year plan builds on this foundation. Recommendations pertaining to administration focus on the development of alternatives to prison for female offenders and the assessment of classification, reclassification, and community center screening instruments. Recommendations on housing include the acquisition of a minimum-security facility, completion of construction for 54 additional beds for females at Dixon, and upgrading of the facilities at Dwight Correctional Center. Other recommendations are designed to upgrade and expand educational and vocational programs for women, their involvement in correctional industries, substance abuse treatment, parenting opportunities, and medical and mental health services. 3 tables
