Two hundred sixty-four, inner-city adolescent males undergoing an evaluation in an outpatient clinic for sex offenders were questioned. The majority of the participants had been charged with or convicted of a sexual crime. Results indicate that as the age of the adolescent increased, preference for a female interviewer increased as well, but only with the nonabused participants. Participants abused by females were less likely to prefer females than those abused by males. However, both groups preferred females significantly more than the nonabused participants. Those individuals victimized by males showed the greatest preference for female interviewers. It was concluded that self-disclosure about sexual material may be facilitated when interviewers of both genders are available. 2 tables and 9 references (Author abstract modified)
