This English summary of statistics and activities of Japan's National Police Agency for 1988 covers reported offenses, police responses, and the public safety strategy for 1989.
Abstract
A chapter on the control of organized crime currently and in the future presents a history of organized crime groups in Japan and their recent activities, their structure and activities, public attitudes toward organized crime and police efforts against it, and organized-crime countermeasures. Other chapters present statistics and information on the general crime situation and investigative activities, police community-safety activities, juvenile delinquency prevention, traffic safety, public security, police response to disasters and accidents, police resources, and police accountability to the public. Statistics show an increase in organized crime activities, juvenile delinquency, white-collar crime, traffic accidents, and the violence of terrorist and guerrilla groups. In the coming year, the National Police Agency will include the following efforts in its strategy: comprehensive measures against organized crime groups, investigative activities to cope with qualitative changes in crime, patrol activities attuned to community needs, and the prevention of juvenile delinquency. 67 charts and 140 tables
