Abstract
A total of 12,522 persons were sentenced to Hong Kong correctional institutions in 1989. They served their sentences in one of four correctional programs: prisons, drug addiction treatment centers, training centers, or detention centers. Statistical descriptions of all persons admitted to the four programs are presented. Section one provides an overall view of the socioeconomic and criminal characteristics of these persons including such factors as age, previous convictions, offenses, types of sentences, length of sentences, education, occupation, and marital status. Section two contains detailed statistics on drug dependent offenders. These include number of addicts by sex and age on admission by type of drug used prior to admission, method of administering the drug, length of drug dependence, and causation. Section three presents comparative statistics for 1988 and 1989 on selected key variables such as sentence patterns and offenses. 40 tables
