This report summarizes drug data published by various Federal agencies in 1990. Many Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) programs produce data on drug-related crimes, drug offenders, and drug law enforcement.
Abstract

The report discusses the extent of drug use by various types of criminal offenders at the time of offense as well as past drug use by criminal offenders. Drug law enforcement is carried out by State and local agencies and, on the Federal level, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The statistics cover pretrial release of drug defendants, prosecution and sentencing of Federal and State drug law violators, time served in prison by drug offenders, and the impact of drug offenders on the correctional population. The report also outlines public opinion about drugs and drug use in the general population. The functions served by the Drugs and Crime Data Center and Clearinghouse are outlined. 6 tables
