Abstract
The text is divided into chapters and sections. The chapters cover legal issues, standards, the inspection process, facility design and its impact on operations, communications, organizational structures, and resources. The chapter on legal issues addresses such topics as the involvement of the courts in corrections, the structure of State and Federal courts, types of liability, and remedies in a civil rights suit. The chapter on standards considers such topics as certification accreditation, insurability, and risk management; types of standards; statute and administrative rules; and issues covered by jail standards. The chapter on the inspection process focuses on the purposes for and types of inspections, documentation, and data collection. The chapter on facility design and its impact on operations discusses such subjects as the principles of direct supervision, components of a correctional facility, and separate housing issues. The communications chapter considers written communications, interviews, conflict resolution, and media relations. Each chapter begins with a narrative and performance objectives, and each section provides information on a topic. Following each section there are several questions that refer back to the text. Answer keys are provided.
