An analysis of crime patterns in Yugoslavia in 1973, 1980, and 1986 concluded that neither intensive economic development nor recession have produced significant changes in crime, although significant variations exist within the overall pattern.
Abstract
Thus, property crime and recidivism have increased, while violent crimes have decreased. Sex offenses have stayed low and constant throughout the study period. During the intensive development period of 1973-80, property crime increased slightly; it grew rapidly during the 1980-86 period of socioeconomic crisis. In contrast, violent and sex offenses showed trends that were independent of economic development. The results of this preliminary analysis indicate the complexity of the subject, and the research project has resulted in the collection and organization of a large amount of economic and criminal justice data.
